Does your patient need a lactation consultant?

MATERNAL INDICATORS
  • Breast or nipple pain and/or trauma
  • Low milk supply
  • History of lactation failure
  • Breast surgery, such as reduction or implants
  • Minimal breast changes during pregnancy
  • Chronic illness or hormonal conditions
  • Breast or nipple asymmetry/tubular breasts
  • Severe engorgement/plugged ducts/yeast
  • Multiple births
  • Desire to wean off supplemental feeds
  • Re-lactation and adoptive breastfeeding
  • Difficult or traumatic birth experience
  • Anxiety related to breastfeeding
INFANT INDICATORS
  • Loss of weight or slow weight gain
  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining latch
  • Insufficient sucking abilities
  • Lethargic or very sleepy
  • Malformations (e.g. cleft palate or lip)
  • Down syndrome, hypotonia
  • Premature
  • Refusing breast when offered
  • Pulling off of breast repeatedly
  • Post-birth separation from mother
  • Suspected oral aversion, trauma, or pain
  • Suspected constant hunger
  • Difficult or prolonged birth
